What Do You Know About Mastering Prison?

Dear Resilient Course Visitor:

If prison is a possibility, then it makes all the sense in the world to begin preparing. It’s never too early, and it’s never too late to work toward a successful outcome. Our team can help.

My name is Justin Paperny. Since 2009, I’ve worked with my partner, Michael Santos, to create a curriculum others could follow as they confronted challenging times. Certainly, everyone on our team at Resilience Courses understands how complexities with the criminal justice system can send our life (and the people we love) into a tailspin.

Please provide your best email address so I can provide you with a FREE digital copy of Lessons from Prison. In an effort to prove worthy as a guide for you, let me give you the backstory.

Earlier in my career, I made some bad decisions. After graduating from USC, I began my career as a stockbroker. In that capacity, I oversaw assets for professional athletes and hedge funds. A bad decision on the job led authorities to charge me with violating securities laws. A federal judge sentence me to serve an 18-month term.

I didn’t have any idea with how I would cope while inside, and I didn’t have any idea what I would do upon release.

I surrendered to the federal prison camp in Taft to serve my sentence. Soon thereafter, I learned that the fear of the unknown was far worse than the experience. In fact, I found ways to grow and prosper from inside of prison boundaries.

Do You Prefer a Travel Agent or a Tour Guide?

The thought of going to prison can provoke anxieties. Symptoms may include loss of sleep, fluctuations in weight, substance abuse, and inescapable worries that torment the mind. Fortunately, our team has developed a program that will reinstate your confidence and put you on a pathway to success.

As an analogy, think of the prison term as a safari. You’re going to an unknown place, and it can certainly be dangerous. We see the danger in many ways, including adjustment patterns that:

  • Complicate relationships with other people serving time,
  • Complicate relationships with staff,
  • Lead to depression and apathy,
  • Worries about how to resume a successful life upon release.

When going on any type of excursion to the unknown, it’s best to work with someone that has been there before. Find someone that is both knowledgeable and trustworthy.  For example, if you were going on a safari, and you wanted to know how to prepare yourself in the best way possible, would you want to speak with a travel agent that books flights for others? Or would a tour guide that has a breadth and depth of experience be a better resource for you?

Our Prison Prep workshop is akin to working with your own tour guide--someone that invest the time to listen to your personal circumstances. Then, help you engineer a plan that will lead to the best possible outcome for you.

And as you may already know from the free access we provided to our Reframe Program, our team knows about prisons of every security level. We also know how to help our clients restore confidence. By collaborating together, we prepare our clients to either create or seize new opportunities. Some of those opportunities can lead to early release dates, better conditions, or new and unexpected careers—as happened for me.

Once we understand where you are in the journey, we can open a discussion about best-possible outcomes. Again, rather than offering boilerplate content, we craft a program that is best suited for the individual. People reach out to our team for assistance with different aspects of the journey:

  • Some people want to alleviate the fear of the unknown and learn everything about what they can expect ahead.
  • Some people want to learn more about how they can take advantage of programs that can accelerate release dates.
  • Some people want to understand how to adjust in ways that will lead to the best possible outcome in prison.
  • Some people want to learn what role or influence they can have with their businesses or affairs while they’re serving time.
  • Some people want to know what steps they can take to enhance prospects for serving their sentence at a specific prison.
  • Some people want to know how they can use their time in prison to achieve specific goals while inside, like earning university degrees, publishing books, or creating business opportunities.

Regardless of what questions you have, our team knows how to get answers that will help you. First, you have to know what’s possible.

How Can I Make the Best Use of My Prison Term?

If you don't know the way to best outcomes, it's difficult to engineer a pathway to best outcomes.

In this era of mass incarceration, it’s somewhat surprising to learn that few people truly understand all that a person can accomplish while in prison. As I wrote in Lessons from Prison, when I began serving my term, I didn’t have any sense of what I would do. While there, I met my friend and business partner, Michael Santos. From him, I learned that a person could accomplish a great deal even while incarcerated, regardless of how much time a person serves. Together, we wrote business plans created content that I would use to build a private consulting practice.

Prior to going to prison, I was spinning out of control and it didn’t occur to me that time inside cold lead to a recalibration of my life. Others have done the same.

For example, Shon Hopwood, has been a partner of ours. He is now a professor of law at Georgetown University and also a policy advisor to leaders on Capital Hill. In fact, Shon participated in drafting The First Step Act, which is the most significant prison-reform legislation in more than 30 years.

Shon Hopwood at White House

Shon Hopwood presents an example of best-possible outcomes, even while in prison.

As Shon wrote in Law Man, he didn’t always hold such lofty positions. While still a young man, Shon did a series of armed bank robberies. After he was convicted, a federal judge sentenced him to serve more than a decade in prison. No one would have thought that Shon could emerge to become such a successful and influential leader—including Shon.

The fear of going to prison can cripple our thoughts about what is possible to achieve. But as the cliche holds, when we fail to prepare, we prepare to fail. Recidivism rates bear this out. More than five of every ten people that go into the prison system return to the prison system after they’re released. Many more struggle to recalibrate their lives.

We’re convinced that by going through our Prison Prep Workshop, our members put themselves on the pathway to success—not as we define success, but as the individual defines success.
